How to start a dental clinic in India.

A practice of your own. A plan to get there.

From choosing a space to welcoming your first patient. A practical guide to the decisions, costs and systems behind your new dental clinic.

A clinic starts with a sequence of good decisions.

Plan the practice before you buy for it. Check approvals and technical feasibility early, alongside your budget.

Dentist reviewing clinic plans and supplier quotations at a desk

For first-time owners, independent dentists and teams planning their next location.

  1. 1
    Define your practice

Write a one-page dental clinic business plan: who you will treat, services you can safely provide, opening hours, chair count and who will do the work. Separate opening-day essentials from later expansion.

    Leave this stage with

A clear service scope and an opening-day essentials list.

  2. 2
    Build the budget

Collect written quotations for your actual city and specification. Separate one-time setup payments from recurring expenses; include installation, delivery, taxes and a reserve for the early months.

    Leave this stage with

A cash plan you can compare with available funding.

  3. 3
    Test the location

Visit shortlisted premises with your architect and equipment supplier. Check permitted use, access, utilities, drainage, ventilation and landlord permissions before committing to a lease.

    Leave this stage with

A feasible site, with local approval questions resolved.

  4. 4
    Specify the equipment

Match each purchase to your planned care. Confirm dimensions, service access, installation needs, warranty, training and maintenance. Resolve imaging requirements before ordering an X-ray unit.

    Leave this stage with

A quoted equipment schedule and installation plan.

  5. 5
    Confirm registrations

Check your professional registration, applicable establishment framework, waste arrangements and equipment-related permissions. Record the responsible authority, required documents and approval status for your location.

    Leave this stage with

A location-specific requirements register, not a generic licence list.

  6. 6
    Prepare the team

Assign reception, chairside, instrument-processing, records and closing responsibilities. Train each person for their role and rehearse the patient journey with test data.

    Leave this stage with

Named owners for daily work, including when someone is absent.

  7. 7
    Rehearse, then open

Test utilities, equipment handover, safety arrangements and the administrative workflow before the first booking. During the first month, review actual costs, delays and pending patient work.

    Leave this stage with

An opening-day checklist and a first-month review routine.

What will your dental clinic setup cost?

Ask for the complete quote.

Compare the same specification, installation work, warranty and service cover. A lower purchase price can leave essential site work or maintenance outside the quote.

This is a cash-planning worksheet, not a supplier quote, valuation or financial recommendation. Check deposits, loan timing, taxes and contingency with your accountant before committing funds.

Plan the space around the patient. And the work.

Start with movement, utilities and safe working processes. Let the floor plan follow your clinical scope.

1

Arrival & access

Walk the route from entrance to reception, waiting and the treatment chair. Review access needs, patient privacy and how people move without blocking clinical work.

2

Treatment & utilities

Confirm chair clearances, service access and the supplier’s power, water, drainage and suction requirements before interiors are finalized.

3

Instrument processing & storage

Plan the workflow for used instruments, cleaning, processing and protected storage with a qualified infection-prevention professional. Allocate supplies and waste handling deliberately.

4

Imaging, if planned

Agree the equipment type and applicable AERB requirements before installation. Do not assume the same shielding or room requirements apply to intraoral, OPG and CBCT equipment.

A planning illustration is not an approved floor plan. Have a qualified clinic designer and relevant authorities verify your layout and any imaging arrangements.

Buy for your opening scope. Leave room to grow.

Your equipment checklist should cover treatment, instrument processing, safe storage, emergency readiness and IT. Ask suppliers for written site requirements and a documented handover; arrange clinical review of what your planned services need.

Check AERB’s imaging guidance

Know what applies. Before you open.

Dental clinic registration requirements depend on the state, premises, services and equipment. Use these as checks to investigate.

Verify the current requirements with your State Dental Council, state or district health authority, municipality and SPCB/PCC. Have qualified clinical, legal and tax advisers review your plan before opening; this guide is not a compliance clearance.

Professional registration

Professional prerequisite

Confirm that each treating dentist’s registration and renewal status are appropriate for practising in your state. Ask the relevant council about transfer or additional requirements rather than relying on a degree certificate alone.

Keep registration evidence and renewal responsibilities on file.

Maharashtra State Dental Council · state example

Clinic establishment registration

Location-dependent

The central Clinical Establishments Act is adopted in specified states and UTs, not uniformly across India. Check the framework that applies in your state, including any separate state legislation, and confirm the local registration process.

Confirm the responsible health authority before committing to the premises.

MoHFW · state and UT rules

Biomedical waste

Applies to waste-generating clinics

CPCB’s healthcare-waste guidance includes authorization for non-bedded healthcare facilities. Confirm your SPCB/PCC process and authorized collection or disposal arrangements; a waste-service contract alone should not be assumed to complete every requirement.

Plan segregation, storage, collection, training and records with your authorized provider.

CPCB / DGHS · healthcare-waste guidelines (PDF)

Dental X-ray equipment

Mandatory if operating X-ray

AERB requires registration or the applicable licence to operate diagnostic X-ray equipment, including dental X-ray units. Follow the current eLORA process and equipment-specific safety requirements before clinical use.

Check the unit, supplier, installation and operating permissions together.

AERB · diagnostic radiology requirements

Premises, business & employment

Conditional on your setup

Check permitted use, building or fire permissions and applicable local business and employment requirements. Tax treatment depends on your activities and entity; ask a qualified adviser rather than assuming every clinic has the same GST obligations.

Use approval discovery as a starting point, then confirm directly with the issuing authorities.

NSWS · approval discovery and state portals

Infection prevention & patient records

Clinical safety responsibility

Prepare staff training, instrument-processing and infection-prevention procedures for your services. Separately confirm consent, clinical documentation, access, retention and patient-information responsibilities with qualified advisers.

Recommended preparation: rehearse the approved procedures and record who owns each check.

NCDC / MoHFW · infection-prevention guidance (PDF)

Be ready for the first patient. And the patient after that.

Decide who owns each handover, whether you work solo or with an assistant and reception team.

    Book & welcome

Set hours, appointment durations and how you handle walk-ins. Verify patient details and contact preferences at arrival.

    Appointment scheduling
  2. 02

    Consult & document

Agree who records history, findings, consent and treatment notes. Give each team member the appropriate individual access.

    Patient records & clinical context
  3. 03

    Bill & reconcile

Test invoices, part payments and balances. Reconcile received payments against recorded entries at closing.

    Billing & pending dues
  4. 04

    Follow up

Record the clinician’s next-visit instructions. Assign someone to handle replies, recalls and unfinished administrative work.

    WhatsApp reminders & recalls

Put the routine in place before the rush.

A clinic management system can connect scheduling, records and billing. Test a complete visit with your team before choosing software; review permissions, exports, support and plan limits.
